NEC Develops Optical Fiber-based ICs
December 09, 2005
NEC has developed an IC technology which increases the processing speed of current computers by 100-fold. The chip contains a high-speed, large-capacity optical fiber network, which enables one channel to transmit 25 types of data, four-fold faster than the current large-scale ICs using metal wires for transmission. The technology, which will make handsets comparable to computers in performance, is expected to be commercialized in 2015.
